Competitions

We are one of the biggest volleyball clubs in Melbourne (and Australia), with teams playing in almost every available competition at every possible skill level.

Australian Volleyball League

There is a national club league (AVL) run by the Australian Volleyball Federation external. This is the top level of club volleyball in Australia. There are generally only a couple of teams from each state. Our club has been entering one men's and one women's team in this competition since 2002.

Victorian Volleyball League

The Victorian state league (VVL) is run by Volleyball Victoria Incorporated external. There are a number of divisions within this league, but you would need at least some playing experience to play in even the lowest division (Division 2). Our club is consistently one of the largest at state league with men's and women's teams entered in Honours, Division One and Division Two (2 teams in both the men's and women's).

Victorian Country Cup Tournaments

There are several indoor weekend tournaments at country towns during the summer October-March period which our club enters teams in. They are a good, fun opportunity to get a weekend of match play in the off-season and for some socialising with other club members (ratio quality of match play vs socialising often varies).

University Games

The Australian University Games (AUG) external are held in the mid-semester break in September. There is also a qualifying tournament in the July mid-year break. As a university club, we enter one men's and one women's team in the AUG each year. You can only play for us at the AUG if you are a current student of the University of Melbourne external. Training for the September and July tournaments will usually only begin a few weeks before the tournament, with the majority of players already playing in various state league teams.

Social training / competitions

We run social volleyball sessions throughout the year for those who want to play volleyball in a more relaxed environment than offered by the State League competition. For more details visit the social volleyball page

Beach Volleyball

VVI beach volleyball tournaments are held on weekends between January-March. The Club doesn't enter teams as a club - in fact there is currently no such thing as a beach 'club'. Rather, each weekend is a separate tournament and you just enter a few days beforehand with anyone you like. However, many Club members do play beach together and coming to Club trainings is a good way to meet people you could play beach with. There are not usually any organised beach trainings, but we do have some beach nets and players informally get together for a hit on the sand over summer. Just ask around at training for details.
