MU Renegades Win at Wangaratta 2001

For nearly a decade, Melbourne University teams have been enjoying success at the annual Wangaratta tournament and 2001 was no exception.

Unfortunately, with the Australian Volleyball League in Melbourne on the same weekend, many local clubs chose not to send teams to Wangaratta, leading to a relatively weak competition. However, as always, those that went had an enjoyable weekend.

The Melbourne University Renegades team was made up of both Honours and Division 1 players and were going in to the weekend as favourites for the title. It was a rocky start though, having to settle for a draw in their first (time-limited) match on Saturday morning. That would be their only hiccup though, not dropping a set for the rest of the weekend. They eventually defeated Camberwell in Sunday's grand final to take the championship.
