Round 1 of the 2007 VVL competition has passed and there were plenty of Renegades teams getting in on the winning action.

  • Honours Men def Eastside Hawks: 3-1
  • Camberwell Cobras def Honours Women: 2-3
  • Div 1 Men def Falcons: 3-1
  • Div 1 Women def Mornington: 3-2
  • Div 2 Women def Mornington: 3-0

The div 2 girls were the only team who managed to power through their game 3-0 to set a high bar for the rest of their season and their bout next week with Falcons 1.

Both the mens sides also looked strong despite dropping easy sets (with the div 1 boys missing out on the slab promised by coach Nicki for every 3-0 victory). Next week will probably be a tougher test for these two teams as they face off against Heidelberg (Honours men) and the BYE (div 1 men, seriously, negotiating the big wide world on a volleyball free weekend is tough!).

The Honours and div 1 girls preferred to get their money's worth out of their games taking them to five sets, with the div 1 girls holding their nerve to pull off a 16-14 final set. Unfortunately the honours women didn't have the same finishing poise and fumbled a chance at victory at the end of the fourth set before surrendering the fifth to a happy opponent.

Congratulations to all the teams on a great start. In the end we were only 1 victory short of taking el presidente Gus up on his old offer of buying a keg if we ever get a clean sweep in a round of state league! But then there's always round 2. Hopefully the div 2 boys will join us in the winners circle when they finally get on court this weekend.
