1996 Australian University Games
The Schweppes Australian Universities Games in 1996 went off in a bigway in Canberra from September 29 to October 4. The MelbourneUniversity women's volleyball team (plus coach Dave and David Martin)went up on Saturday (eventually, after a few false starts began thedrive), and watched the AFL Grand Final (Australian Rules Football forthose not familiar with AFL) at the Ettamogah Pub in NSW. The menleft Sunday morning, arriving in time for dinner on Sunday night. Asfor the volleyball, the women had a fairly disappointing tournament,winning their final match to finish 15th. While the men were moresuccessful, they too came home wondering what might have been. Theteam lost a close quarter final against RMIT-combined to finish 6th.There was some consolation for the men though with Craig Mansfieldbeing chosen in the Combined Universities team(Green andGold award).RMIT went on to finish 2nd, thanks largely to David Chlebna'sspiking/blocking/defense and our cheering and chanting (yes, everyoneknew us by the end of the week!).

The women's squad included:
Martene Bond, Cress Savige, Sue Mullen, Lorna Campbell, Jess Reynolds,Kate Williams, Liz Morris, Trudy, Alice Melland, Patty Chier, JacquiStephens, and David Warwick was coach for both teams.
