1997 VVL Honours Finals at MSAC

The men and women Honours teams played their VVL grand finals at the new Melbourne Sports and Aquatic Centre, rather than all the way down at Springers. The Honour's grand finals were held (a week later than the other divisions) on Saturday, October 25, 1997, with entry costs covered by VVI. With the venue centrally located to most people, a large crowd turned up to watch and cheer the players on.
With the stands full and the upstairs viewing room catering to those who wanted to watch with a drink in their hand, the players produced two hard-fought matches. In the women's final, Monbulk began slowly, losing the first two sets to a more consistent Fairhills team. Monbulk came home strongly though, eventually taking the match in five sets. The men's game saw Preston full of determination not to let Heidelberg win their eighth straight title. Thier cause got off to a poor start however, losing the first two sets. With the crowd cheering them on, the Preston players regrouped to take the third. But Heidelberg eventually showed their class to win a close fourth set and take the match and another Victorian Volleyball League title.
