The inaugural Southern University Championship Beach Volleyball competition was hosted by the Victoria University Student Union on Sunday, 2nd December, 2001, at Williamstown Beach. Held in less than ideal conditions, eight men's pairs teams competed along with two women's teams who battled it out against each other throughout the day.

The University of Melbourne entered two men's teams and both had reason to smile at the end of the day. The Melbourne University 'A' team of Ben Heritage (Green and Gold winner at the Australian University Games indoor volleyball competition earlier in the year) and David Beakley went through to the grand final undefeated, comfortably winning their semi-final against RMIT 25-7. Against Victoria University of Technology (VUT) in the final, the Melbourne Uni team continued their dominance over the opposition, winning the gold medal with a 25-11 win. The Melbourne University 'B' team of Richard Mcleish and Stephen Roux came away in fifth spot with a satisfying win over Monash Uni in their last match.

Just two women's teams entered in the cold and wet weather, with Latrobe University (Bundoora) coming out ahead of Monash University.

Thank you to Melbourne University Sport for again supporting our players with financial assistance to enter what will hopefully become a regular and strong event.
