Renegades Red (Jeremy's team) last night defeated Renegades Blue (Dave's team) to claim the Open Women's title in Kew Volleyball's junior competition.  The match was tight for much of the night.  Blues took an early lead, taking the first set.  Reds then came back outlasting the Blues in the second set to take it 30-28.  Reds started to get on top, taking the third set relatively comfortably.  But at the start of the fourth set, Blues got out to a 10 point lead, and were never to be headed from there, despite a valiant comeback effort from Reds.  Blues went to the change over in the fifth set ahead, and the match was tightly poised when a time-out was called with the score at 10-11.   Reds had the momentum after the time-out taking the set 15-11 to seal the victory.

Blues were desperately unlucky to lose two players through injury in the 24 hours before the match, leaving them with only one substitute.  Reds also had the advantage of being a year older, with the extra maturity and experience probably the difference in the end.

It is unfortunate that the two teams did not get the opportunity to play off against the Springvale Junior State League finalists, as the standard seen in that competition suggests Renegades would have put in a strong showing.

Both teams and coaches now look forward to the Victorian Volleyball Schools Cup, starting this Friday, 9th September, at MSAC.

Seeing Jezza's photo here and being his opposition coach in the girls final, I could have used Henry Winkler's tactic in the 'Waterboy' when he visualised his nemesis oposition coach as a 'little baby'. Luckily, Jez doesn't scare me enough to use this tactic.
