Melbourne University Division 2 Women

By Martene Bond.
I was going to start at the beginning, I've heard it's a very good place to start, but not being one for convention thought that I might start with the last...
VVL Season
We now only have 7 players, having lost 1 to injury and overseas travel (Yes, she has been busy!), 2 of which are setters, which hasn't made things any easier. Overall we are doing okay as a team and are looking forward to winning some games, which hasn't happened as yet this season. We have a fairly new team this year with some strong players, and having so few means that everyone is getting a good chance to prove themselves. Our first two VVL games proved to be less than we had hoped, but we're trying to learn from our mistakes and hope to beat Monash next time! We had a bye in round 3, missing out on the double header, don't they count as wins??
Melbourne State Cup
Due to there being only Div 1 womens, we entered and had to play all Div 1 teams. This, of course, had its pros and cons. We did give most of them a run for their money and had a fantastic final game. Fortunately or unfortunately, depending on which way you look at it, we didn't play our own Div 1 girls - what would Dave have done???? Poses an interesting question really, can one coach two teams from the scorer's chair?

We went as a gun team, made up of Div 1 and 2 players, with Space as our coach. We thought that it might be a good idea if she brought her uniform - "just in case" - famous last words. Cress did her quad in the first game and took over the coaching role with Space taking the court, much to her feigned disgust! We had a great tournament off the court and a fairly good one on too. We weren't too unhappy about coming 3rd and having to do duty though - we tried to protest, saying we came 4th, but no such luck. Of course this might be the tournament that Space would rather forget and that Dave Martin has dreams about, recalling her opening the door after a big drinking night rather naked indeed. Tung didn't seem too perturbed by the whole thing though!

What can I say about this one? A HUGE weekend in sport. All three girlie teams stayed in the same school hall, with the naughty girls from Divs 1& 2 getting into trouble from Nina for being rowdy and, god forbid, DRUNK... There seemed to be some dispute as to what tournaments were about - Volleyball, Schmolleyball, hand us a beer...
Well, I guess that just about sums up 1997 for our team so far. Everyone already knows about the torture that Dave has been inflicting on us since December last year. Hopefully our great fitness, speed and strength will appear on court really soon, in fact the moments of brilliance are becoming more regular these days, soon we will string them all together at once, I'm sure... I don't have any more sordid details on Space, but I'm sure she will come up with something print worthy before the next Newsletter!
