It is with great sadness that I write to tell you that former Melbourne University Volleyball Club member Phil Unterberger died on Tuesday this week. He was a man with a big heart and great courage.
Phil Unterberger, known as 'Burger', was MUVC President for some years in the lead up to the Division 2 men's team joining state league competition with Renegades in 1997. As a player, he used to drive the whole team to Kew each Thursday night in his great old Holden car for competition and annually drove it slowly up to the Wangaratta tournament in March. Phil also represented the University of Melbourne in intervarsity competition during his time in the Maths department. He completed his PhD in Mathematics at the University of Melbourne before going on to work in the finance sector.
As a MUVC committee member, he worked hard to secure better training facilities at the Melbourne University Sports Centre and improved training times.
There are several photos of Phil from the Wangaratta volleyball tournaments on theclub's website at:
Notice of his death can be found in The Age newspaper:Dr Philip James Unterberger.
His funeral is being held at 11am on Friday, October 11, at W.D. Rose, Brighton (corner of Marriage Road and Nepean Highway).
